You've Been Fooled by How You File Your Documents

Whether you know it or not, you are being fooled by how you’re filing your documents and data.

The other week, I was talking to my brother, and I was surprised at how inefficient his process of finding and working with his files can be. My brother is a high school teacher who has been provided a free account that has unlimited data to store documents, sheets, photos, etc., through a popular storage company. While talking to him about how he stores and organizes his files, he showed me the dozens of folders that go back to the last couple of years, which also hold a couple of hundred documents each. While he was showing me his organizational skills, I couldn’t help but mention how inefficient his system is, not to discourage his hard work and organization, but to emphasize that there is a better way.

For example, if my brother wanted to find a file document that he didn’t know where it was, he had to either provide the title or keywords to find that file. However, if this didn’t work, he would have to take the time to remember where he placed the file. According to him, this could take from a few seconds to a mere ten minutes to find a single document. This surprised me when he explained this to me, since it would always take me a few seconds to find this information through the combination of Taproot and the use of markdown files. All I would have to do is mention my choice of AI to bring up the document by mentioning the information related to the document. I don’t have to dig through the countless files or open new tabs; everything is accessible and seen through the use of AI.

Unfortunately, many people like my brother have been fooled by larger networks and programs about what it means to be organized with their files. For decades, they have been convincing us that what they provide is how we are to be organized in the modern era, but that is not just true. The reality is that each of our hard drives within our computers can hold hundreds, if not thousands of files through the use of markdown files. These files enable us to hold the same amount of information on popular storage websites, but you never have to pay anyone to do so. As a solo operator and owner of a startup, I find this element of our computers not just economic but efficient. With the speed of AI companies and tools coming out almost every day, this tool keeps me just a step ahead of the competition and helps me become more successful than my potential competitors.
